We may all remember the time when there was a lasting craze about Pokémon cards. It began as our fun childhood game in the late 1990s and transformed into something so rare that they are now valued as highly as those luxurious cars.
Certain cards have taken the position of luxury, and the collectors all around the world compete for them in the auctions, willing to spend humongous amounts of money just to add the rare pieces of history to their collections.
But, do you know there is this one card in the Pokémon collection that is worth the equivalent of the Very High Net Worth Individual?
In these recent years, there is this one single Pokémon card that set the new world record by selling for over 5 million dollars. This sale set the headlines on fire all around the world, surprising even those people who have never heard about the Pokémon deck before.
This is not like those regular cards that are found in the packs; this one card has a very unique story backing it, something that instantly made it worth millions of dollars. It was not just about the collectible, but it was about a piece of Pokémon history that carried both cultural and emotional value.
Pikachu Illustrator is the card in question. This card was released in 1998 as a reward for the winners of an illustration competition that was held in Japan; only about 20 to 41 copies are believed to exist.
It does not carry the label of "Trainer" like the other cards but carries the title "Illustrator" because it is one of a kind among the Pokémon cards that exist in the world.
A perfect condition version of this card was sold for a whopping $5.275 million in 2021, making it the holy grail of Pokémon collecting.
This card is worth so much because of how rare it is and the fact that only a few copies were ever made. The design of this card is also unlike any other in the entire Pokémon Trading Card Game; the collectors believe that this combination of scarcity and uniqueness is what sets the worth of this card apart from the others.
When this card was sold at its astonishing price by Logan Paul in 2021, the spotlight grew brighter, cementing its position as the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold.
Pikachu Illustrator holds the record of being sold at the highest price ever. There are other Pokémon cards that have made similar headlines:
A 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard (1999) in mint (PSA 10) condition has been sold for around $420,000 at an auction. It is an iconic card from Pokémon's golden age.
Rare trophy Pikachu cards like the silver second-place awards have sold for $444,000, and a signed Charizard with no rarity symbol, signed by the artist Mitsuhiro Arita, reached around $324,000.
A super rare Blastoise Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Holo (test print) was sold for $360,000.
A misprinted Topsun Blue-Back Charizard card was bought for $493,230 all because of its odd history and extreme rarity.
Pokémon cards started their journey as fun, playtime cards for our childhood and have now become multi-million-dollar collector assets.
Influencers like Logan Paul, media attention, and events like Pokémon Go have kept the world interested. This blend of art, history, rarity, and nostalgia all blended together kept the fans and the investors hooked.
