From the basic pathfinding of early games, artificial intelligence in gaming has advanced significantly. These days, artificial intelligence is about creating realistic worlds, reactive opponents, and systems that adjust to your gameplay style, not just about adversaries pursuing the player. AI has the power to elevate a mundane level into a unique, intimate experience when used properly.
Halo's Covenant adversaries raised the bar for console shooters. Jackals cleverly used shields, enemies actually attempted to flank you, and grunts would disperse if their leader (an Elite) was killed. This was the first time enemies seemed to be thinking for a lot of players.
F.E.A.R.'s soldiers, who are frequently praised as having some of the greatest AI systems ever, did more than just charge aimlessly; they coordinated, used cover, and even called out strategies like "flush him out!" Almost 20 years later, the AI in this game is still brought up in design discussions.
Valve introduced the "AI Director" in place of static enemy spawns. This system kept track of players' performance and modified item drops, tension, and enemy waves as necessary. Because no two runs felt the same, replayability remained extremely high.
The AI of the Xenomorph is legendary. The alien uses sensory systems to guide its semi-random exploration of the station rather than prearranged encounters. Although it doesn't know your precise location, it "learns" from your movements, sounds, and mistakes, which keeps the tension high.
AI characters' ability to feel human was transformed by the Nemesis System. Orc captains kept track of battles, made fun of you if they prevailed, and got stronger if they lived. The distinction between emergent gameplay and scripted narrative was muddled.
By giving enemy AI names, feelings, and cooperative behaviors, Naughty Dog promoted immersion. Allies may yell their names in sorrow if you kill one. Little things like this made interactions much more emotionally charged than they would have been for ordinary shooters.
Future AI might transcend scripted behaviors as machine learning infiltrates design tools and procedural generation. Imagine worlds that actually change depending on your choices, or NPCs that can have meaningful conversations (thanks to generative AI). These concepts are already being explored in games like Watch Dogs: Legion and Starfield, but NPCs that feel surprisingly human might be introduced in the upcoming ten years.
When people discuss the "best AI in games," they typically recall instances in which a character or system caught them off guard, when an adversary outwitted them, or when the environment seemed more alive than they had anticipated.
These AI systems, which range from Halo's Elites to the alien that follows you through vents, demonstrate how well-designed code can feel like a person.
